"We have a passion for history and metal detecting"
When the club was originally founded in 1990, E.A.R.T.H. was the acronym for Electronic Archaeological Recovery Treasure Hunters but around 2014 the reference was dropped and today we simply go by the name EARTH Metal Detecting Club of Central New York.
During the first 6 years there was no formal meeting place. Members took turns holding gatherings at their homes and on occasion, even outside. As attendance grew, the need for a permanent meeting place was realized. The first “official” meeting was held in March of 1996 at Post 229 in North Utica. Months later it was moved to the Dunham Public Library in Whitesboro. The last Monday of the month was agreed upon and has remained that way ever since. Beginning with only a handful of individuals, the EARTH Club, is now a vibrant, growing and interactive club with over 60 members. Members attend monthly meetings to share stories, ideas, meet new friends with similar interests, listen to speakers and participate in the monthly finds competitions. Members can also participate in numerous club hunts held between April and November as well as our annual events, the John Seamon Memorial Club Hunt and Picnic and the year-end holiday party. For over 10 years, the Earth Club has been a donor to Camp Good Days and Special Times (www.campgooddays.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer.. Our goal is to donate a minimum of $500 annually to this outstanding organization. Club members raise money for the Camp by bringing in all the scrap metal found while metal detecting to the monthly meetings (its more than you think). A designated club member turns the metal into cash at a local scrap yard and proceeds are donated annually. |
