Food, Family, Friends and of course, metal detecting. Members look forward to our annual metal detecting competition hunt in memory of our former member and enthusiast, John Seamon.
Every September the EARTH club holds an end-of-the-year picnic/hunt at Delta Lake State Park in Rome, NY. Several seeded timed hunts take place throughout the day on a large marked off section of the beach. Hundreds of silver coins, large cents, Indian heads, jewelry and specially marked tokens to be redeemed for prizes are all hidden in the sand. The club members along with leading metal detecting manufactures generously donate dozens of neat raffle prizes. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass while the club provides hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks.
A little history ~ John Seamon took over the presidential reins of the club from Stan Blazek in 1999 and held it until his passing on February 16th 2002 at the young age of 53. John was a tireless workhorse for the club and nearly single-handedly ran the meetings, organized club hunts, started the monthly competition, and mailed out monthly newsletters. When John was diagnosed with cancer he became affiliated and a strong supporter of Camp Good Days and Special Times. Because of his strong belief in this worthwhile charity our club still donates to it today. In 2002 the club agreed to dedicate our annual hunt in his honor and rename it The John Seamon Memorial Hunt.
