The EARTH Metal Detecting Club of Central NY is available to assist our community in a number of ways. The skills and knowledge of our veteran detectorists is a valuable asset and we gladly help out whenever asked. Over the past few decades our club members have helped the residents of this community by finding their lost car keys, cell phones, wedding bands and engagement rings. We found their eye glasses, orphaned earrings, pocket knives, and hunting arrows. We’ve reunited valuable tools for our grateful farmers and located septic tank covers, water valve shut offs, and boundary stakes for property owners. We volunteer our services and do so without asking for compensation. Handing over a long lost high school graduation ring to the owner who has long given up any hope of seeing it again is as good as this hobby gets. That look on their face is our reward.
While in the process of hunting beaches, parks and schoolyards we dig and remove a staggering number of pull tabs, rusty nails, metal shards and syringes, always leaving the areas cleaner than we found them.
Several seasoned members of our club have given informative and entertaining metal detecting presentations throughout our community. We’ve talked at schools, libraries, historical societies, hobby clubs, senior centers and museums, again, doing this without asking for compensation.
Above all our club saves history! Most of our dedicated members are incredibly knowledgeable about the history here in our Mohawk Valley. Musket balls, military buttons, Civil War tokens or one of the very first copper cents minted in Philadelphia, are all little pieces of recovered history. These wonderful finds that our members are making are researched, carefully preserved and eventually displayed for others to enjoy. These amazing collections will one day be passed on to a school, a museum or simply for future family members to learn from and enjoy… and that is what the EARTH Club is about!
